What is a DZTPS translator certificate?
The Association of Scientific and Technical Translators of Slovenia issues translator certificates to its members and to other translators who apply for, or successfully pass, a translation certification exam. A translator certificate is a document confirming a translator’s competence and is issued by the DZTPS with a view to promoting the development and improvement of professional translation standards, enhancing the quality of all forms and methods of translation, safeguarding the moral and material interests and rights of translators, and helping to ensure appropriate remuneration.
At the proposal of the Translation Department of the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, the DZTPS Translator Certification Rules were amended to extend the exemption from the certification exam to students who completed pre-Bologna undergraduate (university) translation studies, as well as those who have completed a Bologna master’s degree in translation. A certificate awarded by a professional association provides an additional demonstration of professional qualification and serves as a reliable reference, giving clients assurance of high-quality translation and positioning certificate holders as preferred experts also abroad. Holders of DZTPS translator certificates may indicate this on their communication and promotional materials with the wording “Holder of DZTPS professional translator certificate” (in Slovenian: Licenca DZTPS – strokovni prevajalec/strokovna prevajalka). Clients and other interested parties may use the DZTPS member directory to find certified translators.

How to obtain a DZTPS translator certificate?
Applicants for a DZTPS certificate must send their application to the DZTPS by email (info@dztps.si) or by post. The application must include:
- A “DZTPS translator certification form – professional translator certificate exempt from certification exam” or a “DZTPS translator certification form – professional translator certificate”;
- Proof of formal qualification;
- A hand-signed résumé outlining the applicant’s previous translation work in tabular form, with verifiable numerical data on clients and translation volume, and, where applicable, an extract from the COBISS information system listing published translations of professional articles or other materials;
- Any other evidence and references that the applicant believes justify the award of a translator certificate without a certification exam.
Applicants must sign the application for a DZTPS translator certification form in their own hand. A photocopy of the proof of formal qualification may be submitted, but the examining committee may request inspection of the original. The same applies to all additional evidence.
In accordance with Article 8 of the DZTPS Translator Certification Rules, a fee of EUR 120 applies to an application for a translator certificate for an individual language combination without a certification exam. If a candidate simultaneously applies for a certificate for multiple foreign language combinations without a certification exam, a supplementary fee of EUR 40 applies for each additional language combination. Applicants for a certificate without a certification exam will be invoiced upon application.
In accordance with Article 8 of the DZTPS Translator Certification Rules, a fee of EUR 230 applies to an application for a translator certificate for an individual language combination requiring a certification exam. This fee must be paid once applicants receive notification of the exam date and venue, and no later than the deadline specified in that notice.
